Climate Change, Health and the Built Environment Discussion Series
Part 3: Preparing, Responding and Rebuilding
Monday, May 2, 2022
11:30 am - 1:00 pm PT
Via Zoom Webinar
Across California and the country, climate change is already threatening people's lives, health, and built environments. We have seen both dramatic and invisible climate impacts — from record-breaking wildfires and floods to extreme heat events — challenge communities to prepare, respond, and when necessary, rebuild. However, these questions of resilience and rebuilding raise the daunting question of climate-driven displacement and migration.
During the third session of our series, we will discuss the question of whether, when, and how we build and rebuild in high-risk areas. We will then look beyond climate threats, and turn our discussion to the impact of climate solutions. The life-saving strategies of greening, public transit, etc. increase resilience to climate change, but they may also lead to gentrification and displacement of already vulnerable communities. Our discussion will bring together UCLA researchers, community partners, and on-the-ground experts who navigate these questions of displacement and resilience in their daily work. Each will share the opportunities and challenges they have faced and will highlight the cross-sectoral practices that can help communities become more resilient and respond to the climate effects of displacement. This discussion is not to be missed.
